JR Pass 2026 Price: ¥50,000 Online vs ¥53,000 at Overseas Agents (from Oct 1)

Short answer (checked 2026-10-14): since October 1, 2026 the nationwide Japan Rail Pass has two prices. Bought on the official JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation website it still costs ¥50,000 (7 days, Ordinary Car, adult); bought through an overseas sales agency it now costs ¥53,000. The JR Group says the online price is frozen only "for a limited time" and has not announced an end date.

What changed on October 1, 2026
- Only overseas agencies went up. The JR Group's notice says prices via the online purchasing service "will remain unchanged for a limited time", to encourage people to buy online and reserve seats without queueing at a station counter.
- The cut-off is the purchase date, not the travel date. The new agency prices apply to purchases made on or after October 1, 2026, by local time where you buy. The official price page adds that the price shown when you buy online, or when the Exchange Order is issued, is the price that applies.
- Nothing else changed. The JR Group states there are no changes to how the pass is bought or used.
Which should you buy?
For the same pass, the official online store is now the cheaper channel by ¥3,000–¥7,000 per adult. Two things to weigh before you decide:
- The online freeze is temporary. The JR Group will "announce the end of this price-freeze period … as soon as it is decided". If you have already fixed your dates, buying sooner locks in today's online price; the official page says prices are subject to change.
- How you pay. Online purchase is by credit card in the purchaser's name only, and you collect the pass in Japan with your passport. Agencies sell an Exchange Order that you swap for the pass at a JR exchange office. Check the eligibility rules and pick-up steps on the official pages before you pay: online purchase · overseas agencies.
Online purchases are charged in yen. Agencies convert the yen price into local currency at the bank selling rate (BSR) on the day the Exchange Order is issued, and the official site notes that this rate may differ from the one when you visit Japan.
