Ito, Shizuoka on a Rainy Day for Adults and Couples: Indoor Plans Without a Car

On a rainy day in Ito, Shizuoka without children, three indoor anchors sit within walking distance of Ito Station. Tokaikan, a wooden hot-spring inn built in 1928, is a 7-minute walk (300 yen, 9:00-21:00); the Shichifukujin-no-yu public baths and Ogawa Hotei-no-yu are 5-15 minutes away and open from early afternoon (300-400 yen); Ito Marine Town, a roadside station with indoor shops, restaurants and the Asahi-no-yu day-use onsen (1,000 yen on weekdays), is about 5 minutes by bus. The short answer: half a day, a full day, a night

Half a day for two, on foot. 13:30 the Kinoshita Mokutaro Memorial Museum (100 yen, until 16:30, or 16:00 from October to March); 15:00 the private bath at Matsubara Daikokutenjin-no-yu (800 yen for 50 minutes, with no statement on whether the 400 yen bathing fee is included); 16:30 Tokaikan along the Matsukawa river (300 yen); 18:00 a uzuwa set meal 3 minutes from the station (1,690 yen).
Half a day alone. The Mokutaro museum, then Yukawa Benten-no-yu (350 yen, 14:00-22:00, 5 minutes on foot).
A full day by bus. Ito Marine Town for lunch and the Asahi-no-yu onsen (1,000 yen on weekdays), then Tokaikan.
A full day by train. Izukyu to Izu-Kogen (750 yen): the Izu Teddy Bear Museum (1,800 yen), lunch, the Izu-Kogen-no-yu onsen (1,300 yen), Tokaikan on the way back.
A night. Keep Mount Omuro and the Jogasaki Coast for a clear second day.

Tokaikan and the Mokutaro museum, on foot

Tokaikan stands on the Matsukawa river in Higashi-Matsubara, Ito City: three storeys of wood built in 1928 as a hot-spring inn, city-run as a visitor facility since 2001, with a large tatami hall, a watchtower and material on writers who stayed in Ito Onsen. Allow 30-90 minutes. Admission 300 yen for adults and 150 yen for children, free for preschoolers (from 1 April 2026); rooms rent at 1,000 yen an hour. Open 9:00-21:00, last entry 20:00, closed the third Tuesday of each month (the following day when that is a public holiday) and 1 January. The bath opens on weekends and public holidays only, 11:00-19:00, at 500 yen for adults and 300 yen up to elementary school (not for children in nappies). The Kinoshita Mokutaro Memorial Museum, the city-run birthplace of the physician and poet, is 5 minutes on foot: 9:00-16:30 April to September, 9:00-16:00 October to March, closed Mondays (the Tuesday instead when the Monday is a public holiday) and 28 December to 4 January, 100 yen for adults (checked 2026-09-13, Ito City).

Public baths that open in the afternoon

Most of Ito Onsen's public baths open around 14:00, which is when a wet afternoon needs somewhere to go. The ones 5-15 minutes from Ito Station charge 300-400 yen for adults; only Oka Hotei-no-yu, a 20-minute walk, is 450 yen. None of these pages says whether the family-bath price includes the bathing fee, and none states a booking policy (checked 2026-09-14). Each Shichifukujin bath is named after one of the Seven Lucky Gods; fees, closing days and a walking order are in Ito Onsen's Shichifukujin public baths.

Yukawa Benten-no-yu (Yukawa, a 5-minute walk from Ito Station): 350 yen for adults, 150 yen for elementary school, 14:00-22:00, closed Wednesdays.
Matsubara Daikokutenjin-no-yu (13-3 Matsubara-honcho, 7 minutes): 400 yen, 200 yen for elementary school, private bath 800 yen for 50 minutes, 15:00-22:00, open daily, tel 0557-38-8926.
Ogawa Hotei-no-yu (Suehiro-cho, 10 minutes): 300 yen, 50 yen up to junior high, family bath 600 yen for 40 minutes, 16:00-21:00, closed Thursdays. The tourist association page does not describe it as one of the Shichifukujin-no-yu baths (checked 2026-09-13).
Bishamonten Shiba-no-yu (2-3 Shiba-cho, 15 minutes): 400 yen, 200 yen for elementary school, four family baths at 2,000 yen for 60 minutes, 14:00-22:00, closed Tuesdays (the official page adds that some months have extra consecutive closing days).
Oka Hotei-no-yu (2-2-16 Sakuragi-cho, 20 minutes): 450 yen from junior high, free up to elementary school, family bath 60 minutes at 600 yen small or 700 yen large, 14:00-22:00, closed Sundays and the fourth Saturday.
Kamata Fukurokuju-no-yu (1-2-16 Miyagawa-cho): not from Ito Station but 5 minutes from Minami-Ito, one stop away on Izukyu at 190 yen; 300 yen, 190 yen for elementary school, family bath 900 yen for 50 minutes, 14:00-22:00, closed Wednesdays.

Private baths you can book for the day

Matsubara Daikokutenjin-no-yu, 7 minutes on foot: 800 yen for 50 minutes, with no statement on whether the 400 yen bathing fee is included, 15:00-22:00. No booking policy is published, so call 0557-38-8926 if you want a set time (tourist association).
Asahi-no-yu at Ito Marine Town: three bookings a day, two hours for 6,000 yen on weekdays and 8,000 yen on weekends, public holidays and peak dates, reception 10:00-20:00 with the last booking at 18:00, entry, main baths, towels and indoor wear included. Booking ahead is advised and same-day use is possible if a slot is free, so call 0557-38-1811 to confirm (private bath page).
Family baths at the public baths — Bishamonten Shiba-no-yu, Kamata Fukurokuju-no-yu, Oka Hotei-no-yu and Ogawa Hotei-no-yu, at the prices listed above; no page says whether the bathing fee is included.

Five minutes by bus: Ito Marine Town

A roadside station at 571-19 Yukawa, Ito City, whose shop building and restaurants are indoors: shops 9:00-18:00 (varies by area), Izu-Kogen Beer's seafront cafe restaurant 11:00-20:30 last order and closing at 21:00, the soba restaurant Raku 9:00-17:30 last order, open daily. The attached Asahi-no-yu Seaside Spa runs 5:00-21:00 (last entry 20:30): 1,000 yen adults and 600 yen children (age 3 to elementary school) on weekdays, 1,500 yen with a towel or 1,400 without and 750 / 700 yen for children otherwise, with 100 yen off each fare after 20:00. Maintenance closures fall on 10-11 December 2026 and 11-12 March 2027, and the roadside station's own hours page says 22:00, so check with the spa if you go late (checked 2026-09-13, Marine Town hours, Seaside Spa). The Marine Town restaurants whose own pages mention a sea view are listed in ocean-view lunch spots in Ito.

Tokai Bus runs from stop 1 at Ito Station (stop list) to Marine Town in about 5 minutes one way (tourist association, Marine Town foot bath); the stops are to the left as you leave the gates (Tokai Bus sightseeing access). The fare is 200 yen for adults until 30 September 2026 and 220 yen from 1 October 2026 (Tokai Bus main-section fare table, PDF), which omits the new child fare, so ask on the day. Walking takes about 13 minutes (tourist association, Michi-no-Eki Ito Marine Town). All figures checked 2026-09-13.

Museums: Izu-Kogen, Kawana and the Ikeda

The Ikeda Museum of 20th Century Art opens 9:00-17:00, closed Wednesdays except public holidays, at 1,000 / 700 / 500 yen for general, high school, and junior high and elementary; its page states the fees are "as of 1 April 2014". From stop 5 at Ito Station the Shaboten Koen bus via Ippeki-ko reaches it in about 30 minutes for 730 yen until 30 September 2026 and 840 yen from 1 October 2026 (fare table, PDF). Near Izu-Kogen Station, the Izu Teddy Bear Museum opens 9:30-17:00 (entry until 16:30) at 1,800 / 1,200 / 1,000 yen, about 9 minutes from the Sakuranamiki exit, closed the second Tuesday of February, March, June and December unless a holiday; the Nozaka Automata Museum is 1,000 yen for adults, closed Tuesdays and Thursdays, with no hours on its own site (the association page says 9:30-17:00). In Kawana, the Kawana Stained Glass Museum opens 10:00-16:30 at 1,400 yen, by the Kawana Hotel bus to Takatsuka; its closing day is not published. Ito to Izu-Kogen on Izukyu is 750 yen, and Izu-Kogen-no-yu is 1,300 yen from junior high and 650 yen from age 4, 10:00-24:00, closed the first and third Thursday except public holidays, Golden Week and the school holidays, 5 minutes from the station (the association page still shows 1,000 yen). What the rain changes

Some foot baths close. Marine Town's Attamari-na (10:00-16:00) shuts in rain, and Miharashi-no-ashiyu (9:00-16:00) shuts in rain, on Sundays and from 29 December to 3 January. Fureai-no-yu is free and open daily 10:00-17:00, weather permitting; Bisoku-no-yu inside Izu-Kogen Station is free, 24 hours and under cover.
The lifts stop in wind. The Mount Omuro lift suspends for lightning, gusts, strong wind, earthquakes and severe weather; 9:00-17:00 March to September, 9:00-16:00 October to February, with maintenance closures in June and December (lift hours and fares). The summit is reachable only by lift. The Mount Komuro lift runs 9:30-16:00 at 1,000 yen return for adults and 100 yen for elementary school (tourist association), and Tokai Bus, which operates it, says it may suspend in strong wind or bad weather; check that page on the day.
Check the coastal path, the buses and the sky. The Picnical Course page, for the walk to the Kadowaki suspension bridge on the Jogasaki Coast, still carries an old partial-closure notice and no current status. Tokai Bus posts cancellations on its service status page, with times and fares on its route search and weather on the Japan Meteorological Agency forecast. The Ito City tourist information office is inside the station (tel 0557-37-6105, hours not published); events are on the association's calendar.

If the next day is clear

Tokai Bus from stop 5 at Ito Station reaches Mount Omuro in about 49 minutes for 880 yen until 30 September 2026 and 1,010 yen from 1 October 2026 (fare table, PDF), and the lift is 1,000 yen return; the Jogasaki Coast is 9 minutes by bus from stop 2 at Izu-Kogen Station plus a 20-minute walk (checked 2026-09-13, Tokai Bus sightseeing access).
