Ito, Shizuoka in 2 Days Without a Car: Tokaikan, Mt. Omuro and Jogasaki

Ito (Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture) fits into two days on trains and local buses alone. Day 1 stays on foot around Ito Station: the 1928 wooden inn Tokaikan, the Yunohana-dori shopping street and the beach, then a night in the onsen town. Day 2 takes the Tokai Bus from bay 5 to Mt. Omuro, Izu Shaboten Zoo next door and the Kadowaki suspension bridge on the Jogasaki Coast. All figures as of 2026-09-10.

The two days at a glance

The order can be flipped: arriving before noon, Izu-Kogen first leaves more margin for the Mt. Omuro lift (9:00-17:00 March to September, as of 2026-09-10).

Getting to Ito Station

From Tokyo, the limited express Odoriko runs through to Ito Station, or take the Tokaido Shinkansen to Atami and change to the JR Ito Line (Ito Marine Town access page); Atami to Ito after the change is about 22 minutes, and beyond Ito the Izukyu line continues through Kawana, Futo, Jogasaki-Kaigan and Izu-Kogen, with Ito to Jogasaki-Kaigan about 22 minutes (Hello Navi, Shizuoka Prefectural Tourism Association, as of 2026-09-10).

Izukyu fares from Ito: 370 yen to Kawana, 650 yen to Jogasaki-Kaigan, 750 yen to Izu-Kogen (fare table, as of 2026-09-10). In this itinerary the only train ride is the return from Jogasaki-Kaigan, so the fare is a single 650 yen. The Puratto Izu-Kogen round-trip ticket (1,000 yen adults, 500 yen children, Ito Station only, same day) covers an Ito-Izu-Kogen train round trip with stopovers at Kawana, Futo and Jogasaki-Kaigan, so it pays off only when you ride the train both ways (1,400-1,500 yen at regular fares), not for bus out and train back (as of 2026-09-10).

Day 1: on foot from Ito Station

Yunohana-dori starts outside the station: dried-fish and green-tea shops, seven 'hot-water-pouring' Shichifukujin statues (the water is currently not running, as of 2026-09-10) and a camellia-shaped hand bath. Ito's local dish: What is uzuwa?.

Tokaikan, 7 minutes on foot, opened in 1928 as a hot-spring inn and was reopened by the city in 2001 as a cultural facility (Ito City); its 1949 watchtower stands over the Matsukawa river. Viewing is 9:00-21:00 (last entry 20:00), closed the third Tuesday of each month and January 1; admission from 2026-04-01 is 300 yen for adults, 150 yen for children, free for preschoolers (Ito Tourist Association, as of 2026-09-10). Ito Orange Beach, a palm-lined beach 5 minutes from the station (association page), runs north toward Michi-no-Eki Ito Marine Town, a 5-minute bus ride (200 yen adults) or about 15-20 minutes on foot (the access page gives both 15 and 20) (access, as of 2026-09-10). Its free seaside foot bath opens 10:00-16:00 except in rain (official); the day-use 'Seaside Spa' opens 5:00-21:00 (last entry 20:30; until 22:00, last entry 21:00, on designated days such as GW, Obon and New Year), 1,000 yen adults on weekdays and 1,500 yen with towel (1,400 without) on weekends, holidays and designated days, closed on listed maintenance days (official, as of 2026-09-10; the company's hours page shows 5:00-22:00, and 23:00 on those holidays, one hour later, so confirm before you go).

Day 2: Ito Station bay 5 to Izu-Kogen

Mt. Omuro: the 'Shaboten Koen' bus from bay 5 (routes I60, I61, I65-I67) takes about 49 minutes to 'Omuroyama Lift / Shaboten Koen' (Tokai Bus sightseeing access, as of 2026-09-10). The 580 m scoria cone, a National Natural Monument, cannot be climbed on foot; the lift takes about 6 minutes (Hello Navi). Round trip 1,000 yen adults, 500 yen elementary-school children, preschoolers free; 9:00-17:00 March to September, 9:00-16:00 October to February (official, as of 2026-09-10). The crater-rim path is about 1 km around (official).

Izu Shaboten Zoo, a 5-minute walk from the bus stop in front of the lift (Tokai Bus), opens 9:30-17:00 (last entry 16:30) with no closing days, though hours vary by season (8:30-17:30 on September 19-27, 2026, for example); 2,800 yen adults, 1,400 yen elementary students, 700 yen ages 4 and up on weekdays, 3,000 / 1,500 / 800 yen on weekends, holidays and school breaks (official, as of 2026-09-10). Jogasaki Coast: bus back to Izu-Kogen Station (Tokai Bus lists about 24 minutes for the station-to-zoo direction; check the timetable for the return), then the 'Kaiyo Koen' bus from bay 2 (I70, I80), about 9 minutes, and a 20-minute walk to the Kadowaki suspension bridge (Tokai Bus, as of 2026-09-10). The bridge is 48 m long and about 23 m up (Hello Navi). To go home, walk about 35 minutes (Izukyu's station page says about 30) to Jogasaki-Kaigan Station, then about 22 minutes and 650 yen by Izukyu to Ito (as of 2026-09-10).

Three things to check

Look up the return bus first; the 35-minute walk to Jogasaki-Kaigan Station is the fallback.
The Mt. Omuro lift stops in storms and for maintenance in June and December.
