Ito, Shizuoka Day Trip from Tokyo by Train (Jogasaki, Omuro, Tokaikan)

Ito, Shizuoka is 1 hour 43 minutes from Tokyo Station on the Odoriko limited express, and you can see the Kadowaki suspension bridge at Jogasaki Coast, ride the chairlift up Mount Omuro and walk through Tokaikan, a 1928 wooden former inn that is now a city cultural facility, in one day using only trains and buses. Two timed versions: A with about 2 hours of walking, B with almost none, for older travelers and families with small children.

Which version to pick

• A (train only, some walking): Jogasaki Coast on foot from Jogasaki-Kaigan Station, lunch near the bridge, Mount Omuro, then Tokaikan.
• B (short walks): bus straight to Mount Omuro, lunch and a footbath at Ito Marine Town (5 minutes by bus from Ito Station), then Tokaikan.
• Take A on a first visit, B for less walking. From October to February the Mount Omuro lift runs only until 16:00 (last ride down 16:15), so in winter do the mountain first (Mount Omuro lift official, as of 2026-09-10).

Getting to Ito from Tokyo

JR East's Odoriko limited express runs directly from Tokyo Station to Ito Station; a JR East media article (29 October 2025) gives the example of the 9:00 departure arriving at 10:43, 1 hour 43 minutes, all seats reserved. Fares are not copied here; check fares and the current timetable on JR East's site (as of 2026-09-10). Both itineraries start from that 10:43 arrival. Local transport: Izukyu trains and Tokai Bus

From Ito, the Izukyu line runs south along the coast. Adult fares from Ito (revised 14 March 2026): Jogasaki-Kaigan 650 yen (646 by IC card), Izu-Kogen 750 yen; Ito to Jogasaki-Kaigan takes about 22 minutes (Izukyu fares and Hello Navi Shizuoka, as of 2026-09-10).

Bus times below are from Tokai Bus's sightseeing-access page (as of 2026-09-10); the Jogasaki bus ("Kaiyo Koen" from Ito Station stop 2, about 42 minutes, or Izu-Kogen Station stop 2, about 9 minutes) ends at Izu Kaiyo Koen, a 20-minute walk from the Kadowaki bridge.

For two or more bus rides, the "Ito / Izu-Kogen 2-day pass" (1,800 yen adults, 900 children, 500 as an EMot digital ticket; day of purchase and the next day; Ito city and Izu-Kogen buses) is the one for itinerary B, whose buses start at Ito Station. The "Izu-Kogen / Jogasaki 1-day pass" (1,250 and 630 yen, same day only) covers only the Izu-Kogen area (Izu-Kogen Station to Shaboten Koen, Lake Ippeki, Izu Kaiyo Koen and Akazawa), not buses from Ito Station, so on itinerary A it pays for only the Izu-Kogen Station to Shaboten Koen ride. Sales points: the 2-day pass at the Tokai Bus counter at Ito Station (9:00-18:00 daily) and on EMot; the 1-day pass at Izu Pota Station inside Izu-Kogen Station (9:30-13:00 and 14:00-16:00, irregular Wednesday closures) and on EMot. Itinerary A: train only, with walking

10:43 arrive Ito, about 11:20 Jogasaki-Kaigan Station. Change to a southbound Izukyu local: 22 minutes, 650 yen (646 with an IC card). There are steps between the road and the station entrance, with a ramp alongside (Izukyu, as of 2026-09-10).

11:50-12:30 Kadowaki suspension bridge and lighthouse. About a 30-minute walk from the station (Izukyu; the tourism association says 35). Jogasaki Coast is lava from Mount Omuro's eruption about 4,000 years ago; the bridge is 48 m long and about 23 m above the waves, and the Kadowakizaki Lighthouse deck looks out to the Izu islands and the Amagi range (Ito Tourism Association, as of 2026-09-10).

13:15-14:00 lunch at Boranaya. From the bridge to Boranaya (837 Futo, Ito) the association's hiking-course page gives about 45 minutes via the Picnical Course (Boranaya to the gun-battery site 25 minutes, Tsubakuro Island 10, the bridge 10, walked in reverse); Boranaya's own site says "right next to the bridge", and there is no official figure for the road, so check the signs on site. It is a restored thatched hut from the Edo-period mullet fishery serving local fish such as kinmedai and spiny-lobster tempura bowls. Open 11:00-15:00 (opening can shift with the day's catch; some weekends and holidays also 17:30-20:00), closed Thursdays, may close in bad weather (Boranaya official and Ito Tourism Association, as of 2026-09-10). 14:00 to Izu-Kogen and the bus to Mount Omuro, arriving about 15:10. Boranaya to Jogasaki-Kaigan Station is about 25 minutes on foot (Ito Tourism Association, as of 2026-09-10); one stop to Izu-Kogen, then the "Shaboten Koen" bus from stop 1, about 24 minutes (inside the 1-day pass area).

15:10-16:10 Mount Omuro. The 580 m cone is climbed by chairlift: 9:00-17:00 March-September (last ride down 17:15), 9:00-16:00 October-February (last down 16:15). Round trip only: 1,000 yen adults, 500 yen elementary-school children, preschoolers free (the tourism association lists children from age 4 at 500 yen; ask at the counter); closed in storms and for maintenance in June and December (Mount Omuro lift official, as of 2026-09-10). The crater-rim path is about 1,000 m, 20-30 minutes.

16:15 bus to Ito Station, about 49 minutes, arriving around 17:05. From the Shaboten Koen stop (Tokai Bus official outbound figure; outside the 1-day pass area, so pay the single fare; check the timetable, as of 2026-09-10). Tokaikan is a 7-minute walk from the station.

17:15-18:00 Tokaikan. Opened in 1928 by the timber merchant Yasutaro Inaba on part of the former Kawai villa site, Tokaikan is a former three-storey (partly five) wooden hot-spring inn with a 120-tatami great hall, a city cultural property since 30 March 1999 and now a city-run cultural facility (Ito City, as of 2026-09-10). Admission 300 yen adults, 150 yen children (changed from fiscal 2026; some media still print 200 yen). Open 9:00-21:00, last entry 20:00, closed the third Tuesday of each month and 1 January. The building is not barrier-free: stairs throughout and no wheelchair access inside (Ito Tourism Association, as of 2026-09-10). Day-use bathing runs on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays only, 11:00-19:00: 500 yen adults, 300 yen children (elementary school and under), free for age 2 and under (children still in nappies cannot enter). The two baths swap between men and women by time slot (men's large bath 11:00-12:45 and 15:00-16:45, women's 13:00-14:45 and 17:00-19:00), so on a weekend either itinerary can end with a bath around 17:00; phone 0557-36-2004 to confirm (Ito Tourism Association, as of 2026-09-10).

From 18:15 head home. Check northbound Odoriko times on JR East's timetable and book the reserved seat in the morning (as of 2026-09-10).

Total walking on A: about 2 hours (station to bridge 30 minutes, bridge to Boranaya about 45, Boranaya to station 25, crater rim 20-30), with slopes and steps.

Itinerary B: short walks (older travelers, families)

10:43 arrive Ito, bus from stop 5, about 11:50 Mount Omuro. "Shaboten Koen" bus (I60, I61, I65-I67) to the terminal: about 49 minutes by Tokai Bus's figure, about 35 by the zoo's (route and stops differ; check the timetable). Then the chairlift (1,000 yen round trip, 500 yen children, preschoolers free); the top station alone gives the view over Ito's sea and hills (Mount Omuro lift, Tokai Bus and Izu Shaboten Zoo official, as of 2026-09-10). With children, Izu Shaboten Zoo, a 5-minute walk from the same stop, is an alternative; check its hours on the official site.

12:45 bus back, 13:45 lunch at Ito Marine Town. The roadside station is about 5 minutes by bus or 15-20 on foot from Ito Station (the access page gives both figures). The restaurant floor is generally open 11:00-20:00 (last order 19:30) with places from sushi to ramen (the hours page counts seven restaurants open from 11:00); free wheelchair loan at the information desk (Ito Marine Town official, as of 2026-09-10).

14:45-16:00 footbath or Seaside Spa. The footbath "Attamarina" is open 10:00-16:00 and closes in rain. Asahi-no-yu Seaside Spa is open 5:00-21:00 (last entry 20:30; until 22:00 on designated days; the site's hours page lists 5:00-22:00, last entry 21:00, so check before a late visit): weekdays 1,000 yen adults, 600 yen children (age 3 to elementary school); weekends and holidays 1,500 yen with a towel, 1,400 without; check the year's maintenance closures on the site (Ito Marine Town official, as of 2026-09-10). 16:15 back to Ito Station, Tokaikan, then home. Tokaikan is a 7-minute walk from the station (last entry 20:00, closed third Tuesdays; Ito Tourism Association, as of 2026-09-10). It has stairs and no wheelchair access inside; if stairs are a problem, see the exterior along the Matsukawa river and stay longer at the footbath. Total walking on B is about 30 minutes.
