Pick Atami for a short, easy trip from Tokyo (36-45 minutes by Shinkansen, 3,740 yen) with a compact hot-spring town and sights close to the station. Pick Ito (1 hour 41-45 minutes on the direct Odoriko, 4,000 yen) for volcanic scenery, neighbourhood public baths and an overnight stay. The two towns are only about 22 minutes apart on the JR Ito Line (341 yen by IC card), so you can also do both (source: JR East timetable and fare search, checked 2026-09-23).

Atami and Ito are neighbouring hot-spring towns on the east side of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture, and many travellers from Tokyo end up choosing between them. This page compares them on the things that actually decide the trip: travel time and cost from Tokyo, how big and busy each town is, how many visitors stay overnight, the hot springs, the main sights and how to combine both. Numbers come only from JR East, the official statistics of Atami City and Ito City, the Atami City Tourism Association, the Ito Tourist Association and Tokai Bus. We do not compare hotel prices, because no official source compares them.

What the towns are like: the statistics behind "day trip vs overnight"

People often say Atami is for day trips and Ito is for staying over. The official numbers are more interesting than that.

  • Atami (FY2024): 6,225,910 tourism visitors in total. Accommodation users were 3,373,038 (3,069,122 overnight and 303,916 day-use), and recreation visitors 2,852,872. August was the busiest month with 776,215 visitors; February, plum-blossom season, was also busy with 581,962 (Atami City, "Tourism in Atami" 2025 edition, checked 2026-09-23).
  • Ito (2023): 6,034,100 visiting tourists, of whom 2,564,500 stayed overnight (42.50%) and 3,469,600 came for the day (57.50%). By transport, 22.58% arrived by train and 77.42% by bus or private car (Ito City Statistics 2023, checked 2026-09-23).

Two things stand out. First, both towns draw around six million visitors a year, so neither is a quiet alternative to the other. Second, roughly four in five visitors reach Ito by car or bus, and only about one in five by train. Ito is a town people drive around. If you go by train, plan on local buses from Ito Station to the big sights. Atami's main sights sit 10 to 15 minutes by bus from a Shinkansen station, which makes it the easier town to see quickly without a car.

Hot springs

  • Ito: the city has 684 hot-spring wells, 257 of them free-flowing, producing 26,836 litres per minute (end of January 2023, Ito City Statistics 2023, checked 2026-09-23). The town centre is dotted with small neighbourhood public bathhouses; prices and a walking order are in Ito Onsen public baths. Tokaikan, the old ryokan building 7 minutes from the station, also opens its bath on some days; see Tokaikan, Ito.
  • Atami: the Atami City statistics we checked ("Tourism in Atami") do not list the number of wells or the flow, so we do not compare the two on that. There is a footbath, "Ieyasu no Yu", in front of Atami Station, listed on the Atami City Tourism Association site.
  • Tattoo rules, towels and etiquette differ from bath to bath, so check each facility's own page before you go.

  • There are 42 weekday Ito Line departures from Atami towards Ito, two or three an hour in the daytime, at irregular times.
  • The Ito Line is JR East, and the Izu Kyuko Line beyond Ito is a separate company, but both take Suica and PASMO (Izukyu at all 16 stations, including JR Ito). One IC card covers the whole day.
  • A simple plan: Shinkansen from Tokyo to Atami (36-45 min); Kinomiya Shrine and central Atami in the morning; Ito Line to Ito (about 22 min); public baths and Tokaikan in the afternoon. Go home on the Odoriko from Ito (the last daily one leaves at 16:02) or take the Ito Line back to Atami and the Shinkansen.

So which one? A quick decision guide

  • Half a day or a day trip with little travel: Atami. It has a Shinkansen station and its sights are 10-15 minutes from it by bus.
  • Art, shrines and a castle: Atami (MOA Museum of Art, Kinomiya Shrine, Atami Castle).
  • Volcanic mountains and lava sea cliffs: Ito (Mt. Omuro, Jogasaki Coast). They are 40-50 minutes from the station by bus, so a night helps.
  • Everyday local baths: Ito, with its neighbourhood public bathhouses.
  • Train and bus only, no car: both work. In Ito, check bus times before you set out, since most visitors arrive by car.
  • If a festival decides your dates, Ito's yearly events are listed on our sister site: Ito festivals and events 2026-2027 (Japan-Event).

Practical notes for international visitors

  • IC cards: Suica, PASMO and other major Japanese IC cards work on JR lines to both towns and on the Izu Kyuko Line. For the Shinkansen, buy a fare ticket plus an express ticket.
  • Rail passes: the Japan Rail Pass covers the Kodama and Hikari to Atami and the JR Odoriko to Ito, but not the private Izu Kyuko Line beyond Ito. Details are in Tokyo to Ito by train.
  • Luggage: on the Tokaido Shinkansen, very large bags (total dimensions 160-250 cm) need a reserved oversized-baggage seat. The direct Odoriko to Ito has luggage space in cars 1 and 9.
  • Timing: the direct Odoriko leaves Tokyo only in the morning and early afternoon, so an afternoon start to Ito means the Shinkansen and a change at Atami.

FAQ

Q: Atami or Ito: which should I choose?

Choose Atami for a short trip from Tokyo (36-45 minutes by Shinkansen) with a compact hot-spring town, a famous shrine and an art museum close to the station. About 22 minutes on the JR Ito Line local train, for 341 yen with an IC card (350 yen ticket). There are 42 weekday departures from Atami towards Ito, two or three an hour in the daytime. The Odoriko also runs between them but needs a 760 yen reserved-seat fee (JR East timetable and fare search, checked 2026-09-23).
