What the towns are like: the statistics behind "day trip vs overnight"

People often say Atami is for day trips and Ito is for staying over. The official numbers are more interesting than that.

• Atami (FY2024): 6,225,910 tourism visitors in total. Accommodation users were 3,373,038 (3,069,122 overnight and 303,916 day-use), and recreation visitors 2,852,872. August was the busiest month with 776,215 visitors; February, plum-blossom season, was also busy with 581,962 (Atami City, "Tourism in Atami" 2025 edition, checked 2026-09-23).
• Ito (2023): 6,034,100 visiting tourists, of whom 2,564,500 stayed overnight (42.50%) and 3,469,600 came for the day (57.50%). By transport, 22.58% arrived by train and 77.42% by bus or private car (Ito City Statistics 2023, checked 2026-09-23).

Two things stand out. First, both towns draw around six million visitors a year, so neither is a quiet alternative to the other. Second, roughly four in five visitors reach Ito by car or bus, and only about one in five by train. Ito is a town people drive around. If you go by train, plan on local buses from Ito Station to the big sights. Atami's main sights sit 10 to 15 minutes by bus from a Shinkansen station, which makes it the easier town to see quickly without a car.

Hot springs
