Kawana, Ito (Shizuoka): Beach, Mt Komuro, Stained Glass

Kawana, a coastal district of Ito, Shizuoka (Ito-shi, Shizuoka-ken), costs 370 yen from Ito Station on the Izukyu (Izu Kyuko) line and fits into half a day on foot. Kawana Iruka-hama Park, a beach beside Kawana port, is a 15-minute walk from Kawana Station. Mount Komuro (Komuroyama, 321 m) is about 24 minutes by bus from Ito Station - on foot from Kawana Station the official pages say 20 minutes and about 40 minutes - and its chairlift costs 1,000 yen return for adults, 100 yen for elementary-school children. The Kawana Stained Glass Museum charges 1,400 yen and opens 10:00-16:30. Every figure here was read on the official sites on 2026-09-13; where a page publishes none, this article says so.

Half a day or a full day, decided in three lines

Half a day, train only: Izukyu from Ito Station to Kawana Station (370 yen each way), 15 minutes on foot to Kawana Iruka-hama Park and Kawana port, then back.

Getting to Kawana, and what is at the station

Izukyu charges adults 370 yen from Ito Station to Kawana Station (369 yen by IC card; fares revised 14 March 2026) but publishes no journey time, so check the timetable on the day. By bus, the stops at Ito Station are "to the left as you leave the ticket gate" (Tokai Bus sightseeing access page) and Kawana-ko services leave from stop 2 (Tokai Bus stop guide): 420 yen to Kawana Station and 500 yen to Kawana port until 30 September 2026, then 480 and 580 yen from 1 October 2026. The revised child fare is absent from the operator's main-section table, and the sightseeing access table has no Kawana row, so the bus journey time is unconfirmed (checked 2026-09-13, from Izukyu fares, the Tokai Bus stop guide, the sightseeing access page and the fare revision notice).

Kawana Station (1215-7 Kawana, Ito; 0557-45-3383) has a window open 10:40-19:00, closed 13:50-14:35, and lockers inside the gate under the stairs to platform 1; gate to platform is stairs only, with no lift or escalator. A taxi rank and a Tokyu Store stand at the station, though Izukyu's page gives neither the shop's hours nor what it stocks (checked 2026-09-13, from Izukyu's Kawana Station page).

Kawana Iruka-hama Park, 15 minutes on foot

The Ito Tourist Association calls it "Kawana Iruka-hama Park, adjoining Kawana port". During the swimming season, the association says, a lifeguard at the park office watches the beach. Showers and changing rooms are listed as unavailable and there is no beach house; dogs are allowed on a lead but not in the water; fireworks are banned after 21:00, barbecues allowed if not over an open flame, camping, jet skis, surfing and large tents not allowed. The car park holds about 28 cars and runs 18 July to 23 August, 6:00-16:00, at 1,000 yen a day - the page gives no year. No swimming-season dates appear on the association's page or on Ito City's, and the beach rules PDF it links is a scan from which no dates could be read, so ask the tourist association for this season's dates. The association also gives 20 minutes by bus from JR Ito Station (checked 2026-09-13, from the tourist association page on Kawana Iruka-hama Park).

Mount Komuro: the lift, the summit cafe, and the walk from Kawana

Mount Komuro rises 321 m above Kawana. The chairlift takes about five minutes each way, or about 15 minutes on foot from the base (Tokai Bus sightseeing access page). Time at the top is given as "30 to 60 minutes" by Tokai Bus's lift page and as "60 minutes" by the tourist association's Komuroyama Park page (checked 2026-09-13). At the top are the Komuroyama Ridge Walk "MISORA" and Cafe 321, described by the tourist association as having "an observation deck for cafe customers only, with views of the Sagami Sea and Izu Oshima".

Lift: 1,000 yen return for adults, 100 yen for elementary-school children; one way 600 and 100 yen. A preschooler rides free held by an adult, one child per adult; pets ride free in a carrier (carrier hire 300 yen).
Hours: 9:30-16:00 per the tourist association, which adds that hours may change with the season; closing days "open all year, suspended for inspection and bad weather". Tokai Bus gives the last ride up only inside a "today's hours" block, so there is no standing figure: read on 2026-09-14 it still showed the previous day (13 September, 9:30-16:00, last ride up 15:55), because the page says the next day's status goes up when service starts. Arriving at 16:00 may be too late, so check the page on the day.
Eating: Cafe 321 at the summit 10:00-16:00 (last order 15:30); its closing days read "irregular" on Tokai Bus and "open all year, suspended for inspection and bad weather" on the tourist association page, so call 0557-45-1444. Kitchen 218 at the base 11:00-15:30 (last order 15:00), which needs no lift ticket; its closing days are only a link to an opening-day calendar. The adjoining souvenir shop opens 9:30-16:00. Both of these are standing hours on the Kitchen 218 page, not the daily block.
On foot from Kawana Station: about 40 minutes on Tokai Bus's lift page, 20 minutes per the tourist association - uphill either way.
By bus from Ito Station: stops 2, 3 and 6, bound for Komuroyama Ridge Walk "MISORA" (routes I05, I22, I37), about 24 minutes; stop 5, bound for Shaboten Park via Ippeki-ko (I61, I67), also about 24 minutes. Kawana Stained Glass Museum (1439-1 Kawana, Ito)

Museum and shop open 10:00-16:30. Admission is 1,400 yen for adults (junior high and up), 500 yen for elementary-school children and free below school age, with reductions at 75 and over, for a disabled visitor with one companion, and for groups of 20 or more. The restaurant and cafe run 11:00-15:45 (last order); dinner 17:00-18:00 (last order) is served on weekends, public holidays and busy periods only (checked 2026-09-13).

Getting there: the official page names "Takatsuka" as the nearest bus stop and says to take a bus bound for the Kawana Hotel, or for Kaiyo-koen via the Kawana Hotel. The timetable it prints - marked "as of 1 April 2021" - runs Ito Station 10:50, Kawana Station 11:07, Takatsuka 11:13, and back Takatsuka 12:12, Kawana Station 12:18, Ito Station 12:34. Current departures and fares are not published there, so check Tokai Bus route and fare search on the day. Neither a walking time from the station nor a regular closing day is published, so confirm by phone (0557-44-4333) first (checked 2026-09-13, from the museum's hours and admission page).

Where to eat lunch in Kawana (without a car)

Two places here have a sea view that an official page describes. Cafe 321, at the summit of Mount Komuro, has "an observation deck for cafe customers only, with views of the Sagami Sea and Izu Oshima" (Ito Tourist Association), open 10:00-16:00 with last order 15:30, which means the 1,000 yen adult return lift. At the Kawana Hotel (1459 Kawana, Ito), the Grill is described on the hotel's own page as "an ocean-view restaurant", lunch from 2,900 yen, and the Sun Parlour as a bright tea room with "a calm sea and flowers of each season beyond wide glass windows", tea from 1,750 yen; the list page carries no hours and no dress code, but the outlet pages do: the Grill serves lunch 11:00A.M.-3:30P.M. (last order 3:00P.M.), 72 seats, 15% service charge, smart casual recommended with in-house robes and slippers not accepted, reservations by telephone with a note that they are taken for dinner only; the Sun Parlour serves tea 10:30A.M.-6:00P.M. (last order 5:30P.M.), 40 seats, 15% service charge, and takes no reservations, with no dress code stated. What is genuinely missing is whether non-residents may dine, so call 0557-45-1111 for that (the 9:00A.M.-6:00P.M. window is the restaurant reservation desk on the Grill's page). Kitchen 218 at the base of the lift opens 11:00-15:30 (last order 15:00) without a lift ticket. The museum restaurant runs 11:00-15:45 (last order) and says nothing about a view, so none is claimed here.
