Snack bar vs bar

• 'Snack' (sunakku): a small counter bar run by a 'mama', where you chat and sing karaoke. Pricing is either a set fee (seat charge plus all-you-can-drink for a fixed time) or a cover charge plus a bottle. Prices are often not posted outside.
• Bar / shot bar: order by the glass. Some charge a few hundred yen cover, some do not. Usually no karaoke.
• In Ito both types open around 20:00 and most close around midnight to 1:00 (listed values).

The Ito Tourist Association's official gourmet directory carries one snack bar: Chuo-cho 11-17, 19:30–25:00, no closing day, 7 minutes' walk from Ito Station, 18 seats (5 counter + 2 booths), all-you-can-drink for groups of 3 or more. Directory entries are self-declared by the business, so if you are nervous, a bar with posted prices is the safer first door.

Rule of thumb from the listings: about ¥3,000 per hour. Extensions, bottles and karaoke fees vary, so ask 'how much for an hour?' before you sit down — the same etiquette as in Tokyo.

A night walk from Ito Station

1. Eat by 19:00–20:00. Snack bars do not serve meals, and many izakaya near the station close between 21:00 and 23:00.
2. Head to Chuo-cho after 20:00, 5–7 minutes south of the station. Snack bars and bars share the same streets.
3. Read the door. A sign saying 'first visit ¥3,000 all-you-can-drink' or 'charge ¥xxx' lets you predict the bill. If there is no sign, open the door and ask.
4. Solo or female travellers: the tourist-association entry describes itself as easy to drop into and welcoming women's groups; counter-heavy bars suit solo drinkers.
5. Check your last train first. Ito Station's last departures are on the Izukyu timetable and differ by day. Taxis can be scarce late at night.

If you do not speak Japanese

• No listing mentions English support (as of 2026-09-12). Karaoke machines carry English songs, and singing needs no conversation.
• Cash is the safe assumption; some bars take cards or QR payments but do not count on it.
