• Odoriko times come from the timetable: No. 1 leaves Tokyo 9:00 and reaches Ito 10:43, No. 5 10:00 to 11:45, No. 9 12:00 to 13:44, No. 11 13:00 to 14:41. Saphir Odoriko No. 1 runs 11:00 to 12:36.
• A Shinkansen example: Kodama No. 813 leaves Tokyo at 9:27 and reaches Atami at 10:12. The 10:45 local from Atami arrives in Ito at 11:07, 1 hour 40 minutes in total. You could take the 10:23 Odoriko from Atami instead, but that needs an extra Atami-Ito express fee (760 yen reserved, in advance).
• A local-train example: the 15:07 from Tokyo runs through to Ito and arrives at 17:16.
• Extra Odoriko marked "check operating days" (the diamond symbol in JR timetables) also run on some weekdays and weekends, for example 7:53, 10:30 and 13:30 on weekdays and 8:00, 10:15, 10:30, 11:30 and 13:30 on weekends. Check the timetable for the date you travel.

What you actually pay (checked 2026-09-23)

• The Shinkansen route fare is 90 yen cheaper. Since March 14, 2026, JR East has priced its conventional Tokaido Line and JR Central's Tokaido Shinkansen as separate routes between Tokyo and Atami. Even Tokyo to Atami alone is 1,980 yen via Shinkansen and 2,090 yen via the conventional line.
• The same revision abolished the old "optional route" rule. Buy the ticket for the route you will actually ride. Do not expect a conventional-line ticket to work on the Shinkansen, or the reverse.
• Buying an Odoriko express ticket on board costs 260 yen more than buying it in advance (130 yen more for children). The Saphir Odoriko sells no express tickets on board at all, so buy before you get on.
• JR East's online "Toku-wari" ticketless express ticket (35% off) is 1,020 yen for Tokyo to Ito on the Odoriko. The published price table covers travel through September 30, 2026; after that, check JR East's booking site.
• Saphir Odoriko fares change by season: +400 yen in the peak season, +200 yen in busy periods, -200 yen in quiet periods, compared with the regular 7,080 yen (Green) and 8,580 yen (Premium Green) from Tokyo to Ito.

• JR East's own Odoriko page says the train leaves Tokyo "from the 8 o'clock hour to the 13 o'clock hour". There is no daily direct Odoriko from Tokyo in the afternoon. If you leave Tokyo after lunch, use the Shinkansen to Atami or a local train.
• The last daily Odoriko back to Tokyo leaves Ito at 16:02. After that, go via Atami. On a weekday, the latest workable pair is the 22:05 local from Ito (Atami 22:28) and Kodama No. 854 from Atami at 22:41, which reaches Tokyo at 23:24.

Changing trains at Atami (checked 2026-09-23)

• Ito has no Shinkansen. On the Shinkansen route you always change at Atami to the JR Ito Line, which takes about 22 minutes to Ito (for example, 10:45 from Atami, 11:07 at Ito).
• There are 42 weekday Ito Line departures from Atami towards Ito, including Odoriko and trains running through to the Izu Kyuko Line. In the daytime that is two or three an hour, and they are not timed to meet the Shinkansen, so a wait of around half an hour is normal. In the example above, the wait is 33 minutes (arrive 10:12, leave 10:45).
• Few Hikari stop at Atami. On weekdays there are three in the Tokyo-to-Atami direction, leaving Atami at 10:40, 16:40 and 18:40 (Hikari No. 707 runs Tokyo 10:03 to Atami 10:39). Plan on a Kodama.
• Some Ito Line trains continue past Ito onto the Izu Kyuko Line towards Izu-Kogen and Izukyu-Shimoda. If Ito is your stop, get off there; the train will keep going.

Suica, PASMO and other IC cards

• On the conventional route (Tokaido Line and Ito Line) Tokyo to Ito has an IC fare of 2,420 yen, so you can simply tap in with Suica or PASMO. The Ito Line belongs to JR East.
• The Izu Kyuko Line south of Ito is a separate company, but it accepts Suica, PASMO and the other major Japanese IC cards at all 16 stations, including JR Ito. If you continue to Izu-Kogen or Jogasaki-Kaigan, you can keep using your card.
• The Odoriko still needs an express ticket. JR East's ticketless express ticket works together with a Suica or other fare ticket, with nothing to pick up at the station.
• JR East's fare search shows no IC fare for the Shinkansen route. If you go by Shinkansen, buy a paper fare ticket and a Shinkansen express ticket.

Japan Rail Pass and JR TOKYO Wide Pass

• The nationwide JAPAN RAIL PASS covers JR limited expresses and the Kodama and Hikari Shinkansen. Tokyo to Ito on the Odoriko is entirely JR, so there is nothing extra to pay. Ito to Izukyu-Shimoda is on the private Izu Kyuko Railway and needs a separate fare and fee. Nozomi and Mizuho trains are generally not covered.
• The Saphir Odoriko is all Green Car. If you hold a Standard (ordinary class) pass, expect to pay for the Green seat and confirm the amount at a JR ticket office.
• The JR TOKYO Wide Pass (adult 16,000 yen, three consecutive days) covers JR East lines and the Izu Kyuko Line, but not the Tokaido Shinkansen, and Green Cars cost extra. Luggage, seats and on-board comfort

• The Odoriko (Series E257) has luggage space in cars 1 and 9, power outlets at window seats, and a free space in car 3 (JR East Odoriko page, checked 2026-09-23).
• Ordinary class on the Odoriko is all reserved, but the cheaper-sounding "unassigned seat" ticket (same 1,580 yen in advance) lets you sit in any seat that is not taken.
• On the Tokaido Shinkansen, bags with total dimensions of 160 to 250 cm need an advance reservation for the oversized-baggage seat (JAPAN RAIL PASS official site, checked 2026-09-23). With a big suitcase, the direct Odoriko is the easier ride: no change of train, and a luggage area.
• The Saphir Odoriko has a cafeteria, and you can pre-order through the "Saphir Pay" mobile service (JR East timetable train notes, checked 2026-09-23).

From Shinagawa, Yokohama, Shinjuku and the airports
