Private Onsen in Tokyo for Day Use: 7 Bookable Private Baths (5 in Tokyo, 2 in Hakone) with Prices, Time Slots and Tattoo Rules
For a private (kashikiri) onsen on a day trip in Tokyo, the lowest private-bath fee on this page is Sayanoyudokoro in Itabashi (¥2,100 per hour plus admission), and couples can book the 90-minute private bath at Hotel Villa Fontaine Grand Tokyo-Ariake (¥6,000 on weekdays). If you have tattoos, the one place here that states it has no tattoo restriction is Hakone Yuryo in Hakone-Yumoto, from ¥10,400 per room for two hours.
Every price, time slot, booking rule and tattoo policy below was read on each facility's own website on 24 September 2026 (links in each section and in the source list at the end). We only included places whose official pages publish a private-bath price that a day visitor can book; baths rented only to overnight guests are left out. Five are in Tokyo and two are in Hakone-Yumoto, about 85 minutes from Shinjuku by the Odakyu Romancecar (per Hakone Yuryo's English guide).

The seven, one by one
Sayanoyudokoro (Itabashi): ¥2,100 an hour, but men and women bathe separately
Maenohara Onsen Sayanoyudokoro (3-41-1 Maenocho, Itabashi-ku) rents a semi-open-air private bath in its garden, Hanare-no-yu "Tomoshibi", in ten fixed one-hour slots between 9:30 and 23:50; from slot 6 (17:00) it becomes a monthly herbal bath. It costs ¥2,100 per hour for up to 4 people, and everyone also pays admission (adults ¥970 on weekdays, ¥1,000 after 18:00 from 4 November; ¥1,300 on weekends and holidays). The spring is an iodine-bearing sodium-chloride strong-salt spring that comes up at 32.7°C and is heated for bathing.
Two rules decide whether it works for you. First, under the Itabashi ward ordinance a man and a woman aged 7 or over cannot share the bath, even as a married couple or family. Second, since a notice of 25 February 2024, tattoos are admitted only if two of the facility's own cover stickers (11 × 20 cm, ¥310 each) hide them completely. Booking is online through TableCheck with a credit card; the last slot (22:50–23:50) is booked by email. Children in diapers may use the private bath. Official pages: private bath and booking (TableCheck).
Kodai-no-Yu (Katsushika): two family baths, same-day booking only
Tokyo Tennen Onsen Kodai-no-Yu rents two family baths: Jomon-no-yu, a round granite tub 1.8 m across, and Yayoi-no-yu, a square hinoki-cypress tub of 1.44 × 1.94 m. Each costs ¥3,300 per hour on top of the ¥2,680 adult admission, with no extensions. You cannot reserve ahead: bookings are taken on the day, after you check in, at the 2F towel counter (10:00–20:30, baths in use until 22:30, no phone bookings). The hot spring comes from 1,720 m underground. Guests with tattoos, tattoo stickers or body paint are refused at the entrance. Free shuttle buses run from Shin-Koiwa, Kameari, Kanamachi and Aoto stations. Official page: family baths.
Hotel Villa Fontaine Grand Tokyo-Ariake (Koto): the couples' option on the bay
In the Ariake Garden complex (2-1-5 Ariake, Koto-ku), this hotel rents a private bath to day visitors for 90 minutes: ¥6,000 on weekdays and ¥7,000 on Saturdays, Sundays, holidays and specified days (tax included), from 7:00 to 23:00 with last entry at 21:30. The official page pitches it at families and couples, and at parents of children aged 3 and under, who are not allowed into the Izumi Tenku no Yu public baths. The water is the complex's own Ariake Izumi Tenku Onsen spring (heated, with water added), and the room has towels, toiletries, a sofa bed and a TV.
The private-bath page says nothing about tattoos, while the terms of the Izumi Tenku no Yu public baths in the same complex ask tattooed guests not to use the baths, so ask the hotel in writing before you book. Cancelling costs 40% two days ahead, 50% the day before and 100% on the day. Official pages: private bath; booking calendars for weekdays and weekends, holidays and specified days (Japanese).
Tokyo Toyosu Manyo Club (Koto): a two-person room with its own bath
Next to Toyosu Market, Tokyo Toyosu Manyo Club sells a day-use plan for a private room of about 3 tatami mats with its own hot-spring bath, for two hours (12:00–14:00 or 18:00–20:00), with access to the public baths and the rest of the building from 10:00. The plan is for exactly two adults at ¥7,800 each (¥15,600 per room), plus ¥150 bathing tax per adult; children cannot be booked. The bath uses hot-spring water from Yugawara, and guests are asked to close the blinds while bathing. On tattoos, the facility publishes two official statements. Its house notice of 1 February 2024 admits tattoos that up to two of its own cover stickers (max 11 × 20 cm) can cover, provided you declare them and keep the stickers on for your whole stay, not only in the baths (guests who do not declare are asked to leave at once, and tattoos too large for the stickers are refused). The private-room plan's terms, however, refuse guests with tattoos or tattoo stickers and add "please check our house rules". If you have a tattoo, phone the facility (03-3532-4126) before booking the room plan. It is about a 4-minute walk from Shijo-mae Station on the Yurikamome, linked to the building's 2nd floor by a pedestrian deck. Official pages: plan and booking and tattoo notice (Japanese).
KUDOCHI onsen Roppongi (Minato): private sauna rooms with a hot-spring bath
KUDOCHI onsen Roppongi (Kobayashi Building B1, 7-10-3 Roppongi, Minato-ku) is the hot-spring branch of a private-sauna brand: three fully private rooms, each with a sauna big enough for an adult to lie down in, a hot-spring bath and a chiller-controlled cold plunge (about 14–16°C, 16–18°C in hot months). A 120-minute booking costs ¥35,000 for Altamira (up to 6 people) or ¥39,000 for SonDoong or Cenote (up to 8), per room; a 5-hour night slot is ¥49,000 or ¥55,000. It is open 24 hours, with unstaffed reception and QR-code entry. The hot-spring water changes with the season (Nasu-Shiobara, Bato, Kinugawa and others); on 24 September 2026 the page listed Kinugawa's Nioson-no-yu, with Bato Onsen's Horai-no-yu next (autumn 2026).
Mixed-gender groups are allowed, and the facility terms require swimwear when men and women share a room, even inside the sauna (swimsuit rental ¥500 each). Bookings are online only, after registering, and prepaid by card; walk-ins are not accepted. Changes and cancellation are free until 24 hours before, and the schedule is released twice a month (for the 1st–15th and for the 16th to month-end), about two weeks ahead. The terms do not mention tattoos either way, so ask before you pay. They do refuse anyone who has been drinking. Official pages: KUDOCHI onsen Roppongi and booking site.
Hakone Yuryo (Hakone-Yumoto): 19 private open-air rooms, no tattoo restriction
Hakone Yuryo (4 Tonosawa, Hakone) is about 3 minutes by free shuttle bus from Hakone-Yumoto Station (every 10–15 minutes), and its English guide puts Hakone-Yumoto about 85 minutes from Shinjuku by the Odakyu Romancecar. Its Hanare Yuya Kaden wing has 19 private open-air bath rooms in three types, priced per room for 120 minutes:
| Type | Rooms, size | Capacity | Weekdays | Weekends and holidays | 30-min extension (weekday / weekend) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ichi-no-maki | 7 rooms, 18 m² | Up to 2 | ¥10,400 | ¥11,400 | ¥2,600 / ¥2,850 |
| Ni-no-maki | 8 rooms, 24 m² | Up to 4 | ¥12,400 | ¥13,400 | ¥3,100 / ¥3,350 |
| San-no-maki | 4 rooms, 32 m² (Yamaboshi: 24 m²) | Up to 4 | ¥14,400 | ¥15,400 | ¥3,600 / ¥3,850 |
Prices include consumption tax and bathing tax, and you can book the private bath without paying for the public baths. Every room has an air-conditioned rest area, with towels and toiletries provided (yukata ¥100 each in the two smaller types, included in San-no-maki). Online booking (TableCheck) opens one month before and closes at 15:00 the day before; after that, phone +81 460-85-8411. The facility lifted its tattoo restrictions on 1 April 2025. Groups made up only of under-18s are refused. Official pages: private baths (Japanese) and online booking (TableCheck).
Tenseien (Hakone-Yumoto): ¥2,200 an hour, but no tattoos
Hakone Yumoto Onsen Tenseien has 12 private baths on its 6th floor (each with a changing room, washbasin and toilet), filled with free-flowing natural hot-spring water, at ¥2,200 per 60 minutes (tax included) from 11:00 to 7:00 the next morning. Its page names families, couples and solo bathers as users. Day visitors also pay admission: the official day-use table lists general admission at ¥2,730 for adults (10:00 to 9:00 the next morning), plus ¥50 bathing tax. Guests with tattoos or tattoo-like stickers are refused entry, so here the private bath is no way around the rule. Hotel guests book at the front desk after check-in; advance booking is through the link on the private-bath page. Official page: private baths (Japanese).
Hakone also has ryokan that open a private open-air bath to day visitors; our Hakone onsen day-trip comparison lays out prices and tattoo rules. If you are staying on to see Hakone, Japan-Event's Hakone Hot Springs & Open-Air Museum covers the main sights.
Two rules that catch visitors out
Couples: check the mixed-bathing rule first
Mixed bathing is set by each prefecture's ordinance, and Tokyo amended its ordinance to lower the age limit at public baths in the city from 10 to 7, effective 1 January 2022, according to the Tokyo Sento Association. Sayanoyudokoro states the same rule for its private bath, citing the Itabashi ward ordinance: no mixed bathing for anyone aged 7 or over, even married couples and families. On the other hand, Hotel Villa Fontaine Grand Tokyo-Ariake and Tenseien name couples as users on their private-bath pages, KUDOCHI allows men and women together in swimwear, and Tokyo Toyosu Manyo Club's room plan is for two adults. If you are a couple, check this before you compare prices.
"Private" does not automatically mean "tattoo OK"
In March 2016 the Japan Tourism Agency told hotel, ryokan and hot-spring associations that refusing a bather only because of tattoos is not appropriate, and listed "guiding guests to a private bath where the facility has one" as one way to handle it; the health ministry passed the notice on to local governments the same month. But a facility's entry rules still cover the whole building: Kodai-no-Yu and Tenseien refuse tattooed guests at the door. Tokyo Toyosu Manyo Club's house notice admits tattoos that two of its stickers can cover if you declare them, but its private-room plan terms carry a blanket refusal, so phone before booking. The safe choices on this page are Hakone Yuryo (no restriction) and, for small tattoos, Sayanoyudokoro (covered with its stickers). For the wider picture, including cover patches and how to ask, see our guide to onsen with tattoos.
Before you book: four practical points
- Time runs by the slot. At KUDOCHI your end time stays the same if you arrive late, Kodai-no-Yu allows no extensions, and Hakone Yuryo's minimum is two hours.
- Cancellation is not free everywhere. Villa Fontaine charges from two days before; KUDOCHI allows no changes or cancellation within 24 hours of the start.
- Don't drink first. KUDOCHI refuses guests who have been drinking, and Villa Fontaine's page warns that bathing after alcohol is especially dangerous.
- Where the water comes from. KUDOCHI (seasonal water from Nasu-Shiobara, Bato, Kinugawa and others) and Tokyo Toyosu Manyo Club (Yugawara hot-spring water) use water from other spa towns. For what legally counts as an onsen versus a sento, see sento vs onsen.

Preguntas frecuentes
- Can you use a private onsen in Tokyo without staying overnight?
- Yes. The five Tokyo facilities on this page rent private baths to day visitors (checked 24 September 2026): Sayanoyudokoro (¥2,100 per hour plus admission), Kodai-no-Yu (¥3,300 per hour plus admission), Hotel Villa Fontaine Grand Tokyo-Ariake (¥6,000–¥7,000 per 90 minutes), Tokyo Toyosu Manyo Club (¥7,800 per person on a two-person plan) and KUDOCHI onsen Roppongi (from ¥35,000 per room for 120 minutes).
- How much does a private onsen cost in Tokyo for a day visit?
- On this page, from ¥2,100 per hour at Sayanoyudokoro (plus adult admission of ¥970 on weekdays, ¥1,000 after 18:00 from 4 November, and ¥1,300 on weekends and holidays) to ¥35,000–¥39,000 per room for 120 minutes at KUDOCHI onsen Roppongi. Hotel Villa Fontaine Grand Tokyo-Ariake, which names couples as users, charges ¥6,000 on weekdays and ¥7,000 on weekends, holidays and specified days for 90 minutes (checked 24 September 2026).
- Can couples bathe together in a private onsen in Tokyo?
- It depends on the facility. Sayanoyudokoro's private bath cannot be shared by a man and a woman aged 7 or over, even a married couple, under the Itabashi ward ordinance. Hotel Villa Fontaine Grand Tokyo-Ariake names couples and families as users, Tokyo Toyosu Manyo Club's room plan is for two adults, and KUDOCHI onsen Roppongi allows mixed groups in swimwear.
- Is a private onsen in Tokyo tattoo-friendly?
- Not automatically. Kodai-no-Yu refuses tattooed guests at the entrance. Sayanoyudokoro admits tattoos that two of its own cover stickers (11 × 20 cm) can hide. Tokyo Toyosu Manyo Club's house notice admits tattoos two of its stickers (max 11 × 20 cm) can cover if you declare them, but its day-use room plan terms refuse tattooed guests, so phone before booking (03-3532-4126). Hotel Villa Fontaine Grand Tokyo-Ariake's private-bath page and KUDOCHI's terms say nothing about tattoos, so ask in writing before you book.
- Is there a private onsen near Tokyo with no tattoo restriction?
- Yes: Hakone Yuryo in Hakone-Yumoto lifted its tattoo restrictions on 1 April 2025. Its 19 private open-air rooms cost from ¥10,400 per room for 120 minutes on weekdays, and it is a 3-minute free shuttle ride from Hakone-Yumoto Station, which is about 85 minutes from Shinjuku by the Odakyu Romancecar.
- Do I need to book a private onsen in advance?
- For most, yes. Sayanoyudokoro, Hotel Villa Fontaine Grand Tokyo-Ariake, Tokyo Toyosu Manyo Club, KUDOCHI and Hakone Yuryo take online bookings; KUDOCHI accepts no walk-ins, and Hakone Yuryo's online bookings open one month ahead and close at 15:00 the day before. Kodai-no-Yu is the exception: same-day booking only, after you check in.
